Progressive Blacks back in the day....

Ugh, it drives me mad when I hear older black folks criticize Josephine Baker for leaving America for Paris in the 1920’s. They’re argument is that she fled from the black experience, and was out of touch.

FUCK THAT, I’d flee this Country too if I were getting continuously kicked in the ass.

And if you remember correctly, MANY black musicians and artists ran to Europe back in the day, either to tour, or to flourish as writers. Going to Europe was the hip thing to do back in the 20’s 30’s and 40’s, and a few black artists made Europe their home.

James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Josephine Baker, and Sidney Bechet, were among the blacks who moved to Paris back in the Golden Era (1920-1950).

How progressive is that?

When most blacks were living hard lives in the South, those artists were living lavishly in the South of France.
