Black Magic Woman...

You may or may not know this, but I’ve been a practitioner of Nature based religions for the last 10 years or so. Wicca, Witchcraft, Paganism, and Ma’at were always my comfortable practice choices. But in the last year or so, I’ve become increasingly interested in Voodoo, Vodou, and Santeria mainly because of its African origins.

And just like prostitution, Voodoo and Santeria is largely misunderstood and negatively portrayed in the media. To understand this reason, you must go back in history to the African Slave trade and the forced Christianity movement during those times. Anything that was deemed unchristian-like or savage by the Europeans was banned, and Voodoo was one of those religions that they banned.

Over the centuries, Voodoo has become bastardized by the combining elements of European and African beliefs, and Roman Catholicism. So, Voodoo practitioners would add in a little Jesus just to make the plantation Masters more comfortable with the practice.

Voodoo and Santeria are not void of its negative aspects. As a matter of fact, it’s the negative aspects that people are so fascinated with. Voodoo has become associated with Satanism, zombies and voodoo dolls. While there is evidence of zombie creation, it is a minor phenomenon within rural Haitian culture and not a part of the Voodoo religion as a whole.

The evil side of Voodoo is called “Bokor” and in Santeria it’s called “Palo Mayombe”. Both are extremely powerful Black Magic forces that have been both used and studied by Scientists, Politicians, and theologians.

Wade Davis, a Harvard Scientist investigated the process of making zombies via ethno botanical poisons in the 70's. It was made into a horror film in 1988 which was loosely based on the book.

Although I have a huge interest in practicing Voodoo and Santeria, I do admit that the uncertainty of it all frightens me. This Voodoo doctor that I know told me to study under a professional and not go at it alone like I did with Wicca. Wicca and Witchcraft is actually tame compared to the complexity of Voodoo and Santeria. And most Voodoo and Santeria worshipers studied under a witch doctor or family member for YEARS.

And unlike Wicca and Witchcraft, Voodoo ritual tools are hard to come by, and should only be purchased at shops and family plantations where the items are blessed by authentic “God Children”
