Famous Former Prostitute – Sapphire (author)

Born as Ramona Lofton she took the name Sapphire because of its association at one time in American culture with the image of a "belligerent black woman". Sapphire is the writer of the novel “Push”, which was made into an Academy Award winning film called “Precious”, staring Monique, Mariah Carey, and new comer Gabourey Sidibe.

In 1977, Sapphire moved to New York City where she planned to become a writer, but instead wound up working as a topless dancer and prostitute around Times Square.

Although I’ve read the book and seen the movie, I’m not a huge fan of either because the content just wasn’t my cup of tea. But unlike many Pro-Blacks and Christian quacks that have negatively criticized her work, saying that her past as an incest survivor, prostitute, and lesbian are the reasons why she writes such “disturbing” material. I refuse to criticize her writing because no matter what we think about her writing, she is writing about someone’s awful truth, and we have absolutely NO right to discount that just because the content shakes us up a bit.
